Mission Statement
FTS Outdoors advances youth development within Scouting America by equipping young people with the outdoor resources and financial support necessary to participate fully in transformative Scouting experiences. We work collaboratively with donors, businesses, and community partners to ensure that every youth, regardless of financial circumstance, has access to safe, enriching outdoor opportunities that build confidence, resilience, and leadership skills.
Our Story
FTS Outdoors began at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, when the world suddenly shifted indoors and young people were left isolated behind screens. Schools moved to Skype, Teams, and Google Classroom. Activities were canceled. Many youth lost structure, connection, and opportunities to grow.
We saw something deeper happening. Kids did not just need online learning. They needed fresh air, movement, challenge, and real human connection. They needed to get outside.
Originally named For The Scouts, our nonprofit started with a simple goal: give young people a place to go, something meaningful to do, and the chance to experience the outdoors during a time when everything else felt uncertain.
What began as a response to a difficult moment quickly became something bigger. Families and youth wanted more than just an escape from screens. They wanted adventure, leadership, skills, and a strong community.
As our programs grew, so did our vision. We expanded beyond a single group and evolved into FTS Outdoors, focused on making outdoor experiences and leadership opportunities accessible to more youth and families in our community.
Today, that same belief still drives everything we do: Young people thrive when they are challenged, supported, and given the opportunity to explore the world around them.
Who We Are
FTS Outdoors is a community-driven nonprofit focused on developing strong, capable young people through outdoor experiences and leadership training. We believe growth happens when youth are challenged, supported, and given the chance to take ownership of their journey.
Our programs are built around real-world skills, teamwork, resilience, and service. Whether learning to lead, solving problems in the field, or supporting one another through difficult challenges, our goal is to prepare youth for life, not just the next activity.
Why We Exist
Many families want their children to experience the outdoors, but barriers like cost, access to equipment, lack of mentorship, or limited opportunities prevent that from happening. We exist to close that gap.
FTS Outdoors works to ensure every young person has the chance to explore, learn, grow, and build confidence in environments that push them beyond their comfort zone. We believe that when youth are trusted with responsibility and supported by strong mentors, they rise to the challenge.
What We Do
We create programs and opportunities that develop leadership, character, and independence through hands-on outdoor experiences. These include:
- Outdoor skills and survival training
- Camping, hiking, and adventure-based activities
- Leadership development and mentorship
- Community service and civic responsibility
- Access to outdoor gear and resources
- Scholarships and support for youth who need it most
Every experience is designed to build confidence, accountability, and teamwork in a way that lasts long after the event ends.
Our Approach
We focus on practical learning, not lectures. Youth lead, make decisions, and take responsibility for outcomes while being supported by experienced mentors and volunteers.
We believe in:
- Learning by doing
- Youth-led leadership
- Real responsibility
- Resilience through challenge
- Service to others
- Building strong community
Our Community
FTS Outdoors is powered by volunteers, families, and supporters who believe in investing in the next generation. Through partnerships, donations, and community involvement, we are able to provide opportunities that change lives and create lasting impact.
We are proud to support programs like Troop 404 Boise and other groups that help youth discover their potential, develop strong values, and build lifelong friendships.
Looking Ahead
Our goal is to expand access to outdoor leadership and adventure opportunities so more youth can experience the confidence and growth that comes from stepping into the unknown.
We are continually working to develop new programs, remove financial and logistical barriers, and build a strong network of mentors and supporters who share our vision.
Why
Because not all who wander are lost. But everyone deserves the chance to find their path.
